Tanaya Harper Explores Inner Struggles in “Night Terrors”
Boorloo’s own indie ethereal angel, Tanaya Harper, graces us with her latest single “Night Terrors,” out now. Known for her spellbinding performances with beloved indie-rock band Bells Rapids alongside Stella Donnelly, her vibrant contributions to Ghost Care, and her rhythmic prowess as the bass player for Paige Valentine, Tanaya Harper has firmly planted herself as a leading figure in Perth’s original music scene. Her solo work, imbued with insightful lyricism, delves deep into personal experiences with depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder, creating a resonant connection with her audience.
At the close of 2023, Tanaya introduced us to “Remnants,” a harbinger of the new sonic paths she’s exploring. “Night Terrors” continues this journey, offering a tantalizing glimpse of her upcoming debut LP, set for release in the latter half of 2024.
Collaborating with the talented composer and orchestral arranger Jared Yapp, Tanaya has woven a narrative rich with strings that explore themes of disconnection and the deceptive nature of the ego. As she explains, “the sheer power of how the ego can trick us into thinking we’re in control when in reality, we are just scared and drifting further away from ourselves” is central to the single’s thematic core.
The track is brought to life through the expert production and mixing of local engineer Andrew Lawson from Debaser, whose portfolio includes The Buoys, Riley Pearce, and Death by Denim. Mastering by Ruairi O’Flaherty at Nomograph Mastering in LA, known for his work with Lana Del Rey, Paramore, Middle Kids, and St Vincent, ensures the final product shines with clarity and depth.
“Night Terrors” captures a delicate balance of clarity and chaos, with Tanaya’s haunting vocals intertwining seamlessly with understated guitar and subtle horn lines. Reflecting on the inspiration behind the song, Tanaya shares, “I was making decisions that clearly weren’t in alignment with my needs and wants, and yet somehow I was still forging ahead, silencing my inner voice and letting my fears and ego run the show in romantic relationships.”
With “Night Terrors,” Tanaya Harper continues to carve out a unique space in the indie music landscape, inviting listeners to join her on a profound journey of self-discovery and emotional honesty.
