Serving up a delicious slice of vintage revival with “Today’s Outfit”.
In the eclectic soundscape of today’s music scene, WFUV’s “Daily Slice” is serving up a delicious slice of vintage revival with the band “Today’s Outfit.” Their musical stylings are a mesmerizing blend of 80s New Wave, 70s classic rock, and a hint of futuristic flavour thanks to the Moog synthesizer and a versatile 6 or sometimes 10-string bass that effortlessly switches between bass and lead-playing duties.
Their forthcoming, yet-to-be-unleashed album, tantalizingly named “It’s AlgoRhythmic!” not only hits you with captivating tunes but also carries a profound message. It delves deep into the impact of social media and technology on our lives. From the erosion of our attention spans to the invasion of our privacy, this musical journey through the confluence of past and present influences declares that “Today’s Outfit” demands your attention, as NYS Music attests.
Among the gems on this record, their third single and second music video, “Animal,” shines as a fierce rocker, fiercely matching its fiery lyrics that tackle the vicious world of online commenting. The song weaves in elements reminiscent of prog legends Rush, infusing them with the grungy bass and vocals reminiscent of the 90s and the sultry New Wave keys of the 80s. And if that’s not enough to pique your curiosity, imagine this catchy singalong in an unusual 5/4 time signature. The icing on the cake? A music video that pits Robots against Dinosaurs, painting a vivid picture of the anonymity behind online behaviours, with the band performing behind enigmatic masked eyes.
The roots of “Today’s Outfit” lie in the pandemic-stricken year of 2021 when the band made their debut at the Toonerville festival, sharing the stage with 90s icons The Verve Pipe and Fastball. They returned with a vengeance the following year, opening for hard rock legends Living Colour. The band’s captivating live performances have also graced various venues in the bustling New York music scene, from The Bitter End to Main Drag, Bar Freda, Bowery Electric, and Garcia’s at the Capitol.
This talented trio, spearheading “Today’s Outfit,” consists of the charismatic singer and keyboardist, Andrew Wood, the dynamic bass guitarist, Mark Garufi, and the rhythm maestro on drums and percussion, Grant Zacharias. Notably, Andrew Wood’s previous endeavour, “Bridges and Powerlines,” left an indelible mark on the New York indie rock scene, releasing five records between 2006 and 2016. They made waves on the CMJ top 200 radio charts, shared the limelight with music luminaries such as The Antlers, Adam Duritz, and Chris Carrabba, and showcased their talents at the prestigious SXSW festival. Their music also found a home on hit shows like Showtime’s “Shameless” and more.
So, when you’re in the mood for a musical outfit that seamlessly melds the past and the present, with a socially relevant message and an unrelenting passion for their craft, “Today’s Outfit” is the ensemble to watch. Keep your ears open and your eyes peeled for the release of “It’s AlgoRhythmic!” because it promises to be a memorable, genre-bending experience.
