With the release of the homelike EP, Shelby O. takes a new approach to blending several genres to create something all her own.
Laced with character, an honest undertone, and plenty of hooks, the record boasts the aesthetic of indie pop anthems. The first single “Carpooling with Strangers” grabs you with a dream-like backbone, detailed lyrics and a catchy feel. “I wrote Carpooling with Strangers when I was living in Lima, Peru and was feeling a bit weighed down by some of the not-so-great things about living in a big urban city as a foreigner. The song also captures all the gratitude and love I felt for that time though.
Things were challenging but I wouldn’t trade the experience for anything because it liberated me and brought me closer to myself.” explains the songwriter of her single. Although the single speaks volumes for the record, to get a full understanding of where Shelby O. is really coming from, the EP should be heard in its entirety.
“I feel like there’s a lot more musicality and creativity behind the songs on the EP. I used to think more as just a vocalist, but when I started diving deeper into composition and production, I started thinking more about pieces as a whole – what kind of bassline do I want, what do I want the overall vibe to be, what’s my inspiration, what kind of beat should it have, etc. So, I think that by the time we finished the songs on the EP, I’d acquired more of a skillset to really be able to express my style and vibe better.” says Shelby of creating the EP.
The story of Shelby O. begins when she was young, realizing she was drawn to lyrics, being captivated by the music, and letting herself get engulfed in that world. The artist was singing and dancing for as long as she can ever remember and even before she picked up an instrument, she would write poems in the form of lyrics and melodies in her head. Understanding the true, deep connection she had with music, she later would decide to embark on the journey of really becoming an artist.
Shelby began releasing songs in 2019 on Spotify and hasn’t stopped since. With a string of singles and videos leading up to the Homelike EP, she has begun to pave her way in the pop music world.
