Softly Loudly, by Emma Nabarro-Steel
Softly Loudly, by Emma Nabarro-Steel
During a decidedly tricky year for recording music, Emma combines melting vocal harmonies, shimmering piano, bass, percussion and soundscape, to create a genre-defying collection of songs with hints of her jazz roots but also flavours of folk soul and blues. First listeners have described ‘Softly Loudly’ as “Soulful, delicate yet epic”, “Multi-layered and unique”, “A grown-up lullaby – a hug in a song”
To record the album, she enjoyed the company and talents of Adam Nabarro-Steel (Bass), Neil Hooton (drums) and Debbie Harris (additional vocals) – “even if that was sometimes only via file transfer or a socially-distanced ‘creative’ walk, because of the endlessly shape-shifting social-distancing parameters.”
“As in every area of life, we gradually found ways to adapt. None of the songs were written in or about lockdown, but it’s definitely hiding in there, between the notes, in the natural sounds and the sense of human adaptability. I’ve chosen to release songs weekly from new year’s day, because I think it’s going to be a slow and drawn-out start to the year. If it gives someone a moment of interest or calm… then I’m happy”.
