Not With Monsters
Carey Alexander is Not With Monsters on his colossal, sophomore release. In an age when pop music only scratches the surface of the human psyche, NWM tears to the existential centre and explores the depths of morality.
Like a tight-roper, Alexander proves capable of walking a delicate balance between classic folk songwriting and innovative, genre-defying experimentation. This album has the devastating histrionics of Bon Iver, the classical ambience of Andrew Bird, and the ‘Top 40’ folk-pop of Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros. Still, and somehow, Not With Monsters is wholly and captivatingly original.
Alexander’s folk-nostalgia and literary sensibilities, combined with the genius electronic backbone provided by producer Gianni Abbott, makes for a rare and ambitious entry into the alt-folk genre. Not With Monsters challenges conventions and adheres to pop sensibilities, expertly straddling the line between art and commerce.
