The Giant Peach
VT-based indie rock band The Giant Peach, known for spinning lyric-driven folk songs that taste like rock, will release its new single I-89 on December 14th, 2018. I-89 pits a ruminative feeling of going nowhere against the early winter landscape of Vermont.
“Songs are strange. A song crystalizes a moment in time. Write enough of them and you’ll find yourself traveling through the same moments again and again – still acting out old feelings, battling the same fears and anxieties. Still missing the same person. When I wrote ‘I-89’, I felt like I myself had been crystallized. Every night, I’d step on stage, relive the same feelings, and then drive home. Do it all again the next day.” HARRISON HSIANG, songwriter.
Recorded by Hsiang alone during a period of seclusion in his Burlington apartment, I-89 breaks new sonic ground for The Giant Peach. While the band’s debut album, Pulling Teeth (2018), paired earworm pop melodies with introspective folk lyricism, I-89 is more contemplative and atmospheric, anchoring itself to a physical space. Swirling synths and guitars cover the world in a first snow that is unmistakably Vermont. At the center remain Hsiang’s soft, emotive vocals.
The band’s debut, Pulling Teeth, was met with praise during its release earlier this year. SEVEN DAYS described the Pulling Teeth as “sprawling, orchestral … contemplative … an instantly likable offering of forlorn yet upbeat songs on music’s most familiar subject.” The band has shared a stage with artists such as Vancouver’s Jasper Sloan Yip and many local Vermont bands, including The Fever Dolls , J Bengoy, and Julia Caesar. For live music opportunities, The Giant Peach will be an artist in residency at Radio Bean in Burlington VT this January, every Thursday at 7PM.
