flowstate is the duo of Hobday and tomdaddy. They produce an atmospheric vein of downtempo electronic hip-hop. The definition of flowstate: Cohesion between body and mind that allows any given task to be completed with minimal thought and effort; a state of being in which an individual flows towards its goal, like a river to a delta.
“The genesis of our group flowstate was alchemic and completely unintentional. I had been making beats for a few years and one day tomdaddy came over, wrote some funny lyrics on the spot and asked if he could record them,” Hobday explains. “We were just messing around I said ‘hell yeah let’s do it’ and his voice actually ended up sounding super dope on the track!” Honestly, from the first moment his voice just seemed to fit very naturally with the beats I was producing, and there was never really any doubt after that.”
“Tommy is a very creative person and writing lyrics has always come naturally to him. The most amazing part about all of this is that we were already soul brothers, so it made perfect sense. It still amazes me how naturally this all came about and it’s fitting, considering our name. Over the course of the last 2-3 years our sound has developed in ways I could have never imagined and my vocal quality is finally starting to come along as well. We have very different vocal tones and when we’re both on the track it seems to balance really nicely.”
Above all, the duo strives to bring love to this world. “When Tommy and I are together there is just an energy and magnetism about what we do,” Hobday continues. “We are able to pull people into what we are experiencing and elevate their vibrational frequencies. I feel like so many artists today do not show the fans the love and respect that they deserve. Like during live shows, these people have PAID their hard earned money to see you perform. That’s a big deal. I think a crowd full of people all gathered to join in a musical experience is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen, and it has brought me to tears more times than I can count. One person at a time we want to change the way we communicate and experience each other. Make people smile, and give them more hugs.”
Hobday explains: “This is one of our favorite tracks off of the first project because it really gives the listener an inside view of what we are experiencing as musicians, creators, and performers. Tomdaddy is spittin’ all the lyrics on this one and the song follows his journey. It feels to me like Tommy is really able to express how he is feeling about this whole process. Because like anything in this world, there are good and bad parts about it. The road isn’t always easy, but it’s fucking worth it. Even when life is a struggle there is a beauty to be found. But above all else, we are both hopelessly in love with the music, and that is the final message of the track. I (Hobday) dropped a guitar solo on this track as well, and I feel that it really helps emphasize the warm and natural feeling of the music.”
“As for the creative process, something that is perhaps unique about the way we make music is that I make beats and Tommy writes his lyrics completely separately. At a later time, we come together and see what fits where, and as if by magic the different pieces seem to fit together time and time again.”
