Say Sue Me – Old Town (Damnably/Electric Muse 2018) by Damnably Records
‘Old Town’ is the first single taken from Say Sue Me’s forthcoming second album. Recorded by engineer Chun Hakju at his Mushroom Recording Studio in Seoul and releases on digital (Feb 9th)
The surf-inspired indie rock/pop quartet from Busan, South Korea released a compilation album, RSD EP and split 7” single (w/ Otoboke Beaver) on Damnably in 2017 – their first releases (& tour) outside South Korea. In 2018, the band showcase at SXSW, play at The Great Escape festival, joining Otoboke Beaver’s ‘ATTYUUMA’ (blink of an eye) tour, and embark on a solo UK/EU tour. Their new album will be released on April 13th from Damnably and Electric Muse.
Friends since 5th grade Jae Young (Bass) and Kim Byungkyu (guitar) met drummer kang Semin at high school and played in bands together until the winter of 2012, when one day they were drinking tea and beer at a tea shop in Nampo-dong, and Sumi arrived. They liked her speaking voice and immediately offered her a spot as the vocalist in a new band that would become Say Sue Me. Sumi Choi turned out to be a natural at songwriting. Semin sadly suffered trauma from a fall. New drummer Changwon stands in while they await Semin’s recovery.
“The first single, ‘Old Town’, was made when we first started working on the new album around 2 years ago, so it feels like a song from the past. As one does, after graduation I started working at a job that was far from my dream, but a handful of close friends I had always hung out with, left the city and found positions in other areas or countries. I began to feel as if I were the last person left in this city. I was in a chaotic state for a long time, both wanting to leave the city and wanting to stay. This story makes up the first and second verse of the song, and in the third verse, I plainly tell my friends who’ve gone away, ‘I feel empty without you.’ At first we didn’t think we’d release this song as a single because Byunggyu didn’t even want to put it on the album. However, we noticed that everyone seemed to like it, so in the end we decided that we’d include it. We worked on this song with three different drummers and we could see that all three found it really difficult. Changwon is proud of himself for having mastered the drums on this song.” SUMI CHOI

“Twee, but not too twee, Busan, South Korea four-piece Say Sue Me is my favorite recent random discovery… Really sweet, melodic rock that makes me feel like I’m in high school.” The Fader
“… an addictive amalgam of sugary indie pop and gritty surf that showcases a finely-tuned sense of melody and technical skill… Nary a song on Say Sue Me isn’t a total ear worm.” Bandcamp Daily
Hazy, somewhat melancholy, but exuding a beautifully golden glow that lingers for long after the track has finished…a wonderful burst of guitar pop,” Gold Flake Paint
