Create Or Destroy by Monsell
New Hampshire-based Coulter Monsell is a multi-instrumentalist capable of stirring soundscapes and rich melodic development. His debut album, Create or Destroy, features a variety of tracks that meld his multi-instrumental prowess with an emotional vein of songwriting, reminding tonally of Beck and Radiohead.
“Create or Destroy” is the title track of my album, and it’s about the choice of having a positive or negative outlook on life,” Monsell says. “I feel as though this is very relevant to today’s world, as there is so much negative news always swirling around us. I also had a personal experience where there was someone I cared very much about who had a negative outlook on life, and it was bringing me down. It was really tough to part from this person, but I came out on the other side the happiest I’ve ever been and with the best outlook on life I’ve ever had. The album is about my journey through this process, and I wish to give people hope who are struggling with negative situations.”
Monsell’s music career got started at age 14, as a drummer. Guitar came a couple years later, culminating in the writing of his first song “Build a Town” within a couple hours of owning a guitar. Upon going to college, Coulter saw the band Puscifer in concert, the act’s electronic incorporation wowing him. The gig inspired him to build a recording studio with his friend Mason. “Over two years my studio grew and I recorded my album while going through the worst breakup I had gone through,” Monsell explains. “It was with someone who was extremely negative, and the whole album kind of came together. I am so thankful for that experience because it let me grow into who I am today, and gave me fuel for my project. I wanted to write music about what I was feeling, but always with a sense of hope at the end of the songs. I want people to know it’s OK to feel poorly, sad, depressed, whatever, but there’s always a positive outcome. If you fight for it, don’t become the victim and persevere, you will always make it out on the other side.”
